The Power of Small Steps
Breaking big goals into small steps allows them to be easier, more attainable and more realistic, which sets you up for success. It allows you to celebrate yourself throughout the process and to feel accomplished.
Take new years resolutions, for example. We’ve all been trained to set big goals for ourselves at the beginning of the year, like “I want to workout five days per week this year” or “I want to lose 15 pounds in the next three months”. Goal setting is great, but a goal this big sets you up for failure. Take your big goal and break it into tiny steps. For instance, when you set out to move your body five days a week and you only make it to two days, you feel like you failed. Often times this is when we give up. Instead of starting big, start with one day. Decide that today, I will move my body in a way that feels good to me. When tomorrow comes, make the same decision. Do what feels good to you. I call this The Small Changes Big Impact Method and it works every single time.
One good decision at a time accumulates over time and creates new, healthy habits you can stick with for a lifetime. In fact, these habits become part of who you are so seamlessly you don’t even realize it at the time. Making small steps towards a greater goal is a powerful tool.
Taking small steps may not feel like you are making changes, but the best part is those changes become easy, they become second nature, they give you a feeling of success and they stick.
Write down your big goals and then write down all of the small steps you can take to achieve them. Think outside the box and be open to trying something you’ve never done before. The space between comfort and fear is where success lies.
